Why family holiday card sessions feel so high-stakes (and why they don't have to)

There's something about the holiday card that carries a lot of emotional weight. It's the photo you send to grandparents, old friends, people you only hear from once a year. You want it to represent your family well.

But "representing your family well" doesn't mean looking like a catalog shoot. Some families fall in love with the candid moment - everyone laughing around the kitchen table, or the youngest one making a face that is 100% them. Other families want something more formal, everyone together, smiling, looking like the unit they are. Both are completely valid. Both can be beautiful.

What I've learned after years of working with families is that the photo you'll actually want to send is the one that feels true to who you are right now, in this season of life.

A moment that still makes me laugh

A couple of years ago, I photographed an extended family session - grandparents, adult siblings, spouses, and three little ones ranging from about two to five years old. They had rented a gorgeous Airbnb for the occasion. We moved some furniture around, built out a beautiful setup, and the ambiance was just right.

We worked through the whole family together, then broke into smaller groupings - parents with their kids, adult siblings, grandparents with grandkids. Finally, we got to just the three littles: two brothers and their female cousin. They sat there so sweetly at first. And then the youngest decided it was time for his WWE debut and just took out his older brother, while their cousin sat beside them with the most perfect wide-eyed expression on her face.

I kept shooting. Of course I did.

We were all laughing; well, almost all of us. Dad was doing his best to separate the two boys. But that sequence of photos? It was real. It was hilarious. It was them. Not everyone would put that on their holiday card, but I absolutely would - because hey, that's real life.

What Actually Makes the Difference

So what separates the photos families love from the ones they settle for? Here's what I've seen, session after session.
It starts with outfit coordination - but not the way you think

Nobody needs to be matchy-matchy
That look is firmly in the past. What I do ask families to think about is complementary colors. When the tones in your outfits work together, the photos feel cohesive without feeling stiff or overdone. It's a small thing that makes a big visual difference.

If you're not sure where to start, I help guide my clients through this. Most families don't come in with a firm plan - they're relying on me to point them in the right direction, and that's completely fine.

It's a mix of formal and storytelling images
My family sessions have always been a blend of both. We do some directed, more formal posing - everyone together, looking great. And we also capture the in-between moments, the ones that tell the story of your family as it actually is. That's where the magic usually lives.

Some families gravitate toward the casual, storytelling images when they see their gallery. Others fall in love with the formal shot where everyone looks happy to be there. I've found it really depends on the family - and that's why I shoot both, every time.

The story you want to tell matters
The photos that families truly love are the ones that show who they are at that specific moment in time. A new baby. A kid who just lost her two front teeth. The grandparents who finally made it in from out of town. These details matter, and they're worth leaning into.

The One Thing I Wish Every Family Knew Before They Arrived

This is the big one: families worry way too much about how their kids are going to behave.

I hear it a lot: "I'm so sorry if she's difficult." "He's on the struggle bus." "They've been fighting all morning."

Here's the thing: kids are kids. They aren’t going to be perfect every time, and that is absolutely okay. Some are shy. Some are bouncing off the walls. Some just go with the flow. I've seen all of it. I was a teacher - I know how to get genuine reactions out of kids, and I'll get there with yours too. It may take a few minutes, but we always get there.

The part that actually shows up in the images? Mom's stress level. When a parent is tense and worried about how their child is going to behave, that energy travels right into the photos. So the single best thing you can do to prepare for your session is decide, before you even get out of the car, that you're going to enjoy the process.

Let me handle the kids. You just show up and be present.

Why this is a season worth documenting

Senior year gets a lot of the spotlight when it comes to milestone photography, and rightfully so. But family photos carry their own kind of weight. They mark a moment in time that you can't get back.

The three-year-old who stages a WWE match in the middle of your session will be seven the next time you blink. The family gathered together in that rented Airbnb - everyone under one roof, laughing, slightly chaotic - that moment exists once.

A great family holiday photo doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be real. And real, captured well, is something your family will look back on twenty years from now and feel.
