Book the photographer, plan the outfits, pick the location. But somewhere in the middle of all that planning, the question of hair, makeup, and skin prep tends to get either way overthought or barely considered at all. After photographing seniors for years, I can tell you that the prep decisions made in the days before a session - and the morning of - really do show up in the images. Not always in the ways you'd expect, though.

Here's what I've actually seen work, what's felt like overkill, and the one thing almost nobody thinks to ask about.

​Most Girls Already Know What They're Doing

One of the things I love most about photographing senior girls is that the majority of them do their own hair and makeup and they do a genuinely great job. They know their face. They know what makes them feel like themselves. And that confidence? It shows up in the photos.

Even my most natural, low-key seniors who don't typically wear much makeup at all will usually reach for a few basics before their session: a tinted moisturizer, a little mascara, some lip balm. That's it. And it works beautifully, because the goal has always been for your portraits to look like you, not a version of you that's been transformed into someone else.

You don't need a professional glam squad to get great senior portraits. What you need is to feel comfortable and like yourself when you step in front of my camera.

​The One Thing That Actually Causes Problems on Session Day

If there's a consistent challenge I run into during sessions, it's the wind.

Southeastern Wisconsin is not shy about sending a breeze at the worst possible moment. Flyaways can show up in almost every outdoor photo if you're not prepared, and fixing them in editing takes real time. That's why I always come to sessions with a brush-on hair serum to help tame them on the spot. It's one of those small things that makes a big difference and keeps the session moving without a lot of interruption.

So if you're planning your own hair for the session, a lightweight smoothing product is your best friend, especially if we're shooting somewhere open or near water.

​What I'd Actually Tell You About Hair and Makeup Prep

Here's my honest, straightforward take:

Do your own hair and makeup if that's what makes you feel most like yourself. A professional blowout or makeup application can be a fun treat, but it's not something I'd call necessary for most sessions. The seniors who look the most radiant in their portraits are the ones who feel relaxed and confident - and that usually means looking the way they look every day, just a little more put-together.

That said, here's what I do think matters:
  • Don't do anything drastic right before your session. A dramatic hair color change, a completely new haircut, or a bold style shift you've never tried before - these things can leave you feeling unsettled in front of the camera. And anything very trend-specific can feel dated when you look back in 10 or 20 years. (Think blue frosted eye shadow. Enough said.)
  • For senior boys, a haircut is a good idea - just not the week of. Getting a trim about one to two weeks before the session gives the cut time to settle so it looks natural and not brand new.
  • Keep makeup personal and wearable. If you don't usually wear a full face of makeup, don't start for portrait day. The camera picks up on discomfort, and you want to feel at ease.

​The Prep Step Almost Nobody Thinks to Ask About

This is the one I wish more clients would ask me about, because when it's missing, I can sometimes see it in the photos:
Hydration and sleep.

I know it's summer. I know late nights happen. But not getting enough sleep in the days before your session really can show up in portraits - in skin tone, in energy, in the eyes. And dehydration has a way of making skin look dull in ways that are hard to fix after the fact.

My honest advice: start drinking more water a few days before your session, not just the morning of. And do your best to get real rest the night before. It's one of the simplest things you can do, and it makes a genuine difference in how you look and how you feel walking into your session.

Senior portraits are one of those things that feel like a moment but become a memory. Twenty years from now, you'll pull these images out and want to see yourself - the real version of you at this specific, unrepeatable time in your life.
That's why I don't encourage anything that feels like a costume or a performance. The prep tips I share aren't about achieving some polished, picture-perfect look. They're about making sure nothing gets in the way of the real you showing up in your portraits.

A little smoothing serum for the wind. A haircut timed right. Some water and a good night's sleep. That's genuinely most of what you need.

And I want to give you a real answer, not a vague "it depends" non-answer, but an honest look at what you're actually paying for, what you're risking when you go cheap, and how to figure out what's right for your family.

What You're Really Asking
When most parents ask about senior portrait pricing, what they're really asking underneath that question is: will this fit our budget? That's a completely fair question. Senior year is expensive: cap and gown, prom, grad parties, college deposits. Senior photos can feel like one more line item to stress over. But before you filter by price, I want you to consider a different question. It's not just how much does it cost. It's what am I actually getting and what am I risking if I go with the cheapest option?

The Biggest Misconception About Senior Portrait Pricing
You get what you pay for. I know that sounds like something every photographer says to justify their rates, so let me break down what it actually means in practice. A lower price often means less experience behind the camera; and that shows up in the images. Bad lighting, flat images, unflattering poses that nobody caught in the moment. It often means little to no professional editing, so what you see is essentially what came straight out of the camera. It means a smaller, inconsistently curated gallery where not every image is actually a keeper. And it almost always means you're walking away with digital files and nothing else. That last part is where I see families get hurt the most.

The Digital Files Problem Nobody Talks About
A lot of budget photographers offer a session fee plus "all the digitals" and that sounds like a fantastic deal. But here's what I've watched happen over and over again across 30 years in this industry.

People have great intentions. They download the files, save them to a jump drive or a Google Drive folder, and fully plan to get them printed someday. Someday never comes. Life gets busy. And then the jump drive gets lost. The hard drive crashes. The Google account gets abandoned or locked. And just like that, the images from one of the most significant years of your child's life are gone.

I still have negatives from 1996. 1996. I have been safeguarding people's milestone images for three decades. When you work with me, your files don't disappear into a folder you'll never open. That kind of long-term care is part of what you're paying for, and it's something a $200 session simply cannot offer you.

A Real Story: What the "Cheaper Option" Actually Looked Like
A client came to me for her daughter's senior portraits after hiring a different photographer for her son's college graduation photos. The experience had been frustrating from start to finish. That photographer took a long time to deliver, sent far fewer images than expected, and the quality just wasn't there. Flat lighting, inconsistent editing, nothing that felt polished or intentional.

When she hired me for her daughter, she told me afterward how different the whole experience was. Clear communication throughout. A genuine connection between her daughter and me during the session, not just someone pointing a camera at a teenager who didn't know what to do with her hands. Images that were well-lit, beautifully edited, and carefully curated.

I have over 30 years experience behind the camera. I know how to find the light. I know how to direct a teenager who has never been in front of a professional photographer and make her feel like she's just hanging out with a friend. I know what it takes to get an image that makes a mom cry happy tears when she sees it;  and I know how to get there consistently, not just by accident.

I'm not handing you a thumb drive with a ribbon on it and calling it a day. Every product I offer is heirloom quality and archival, meaning it's designed to be around for decades. What I'd Say to a Parent Comparing Me to a $200 Option
If you're weighing a $200 session-and-digitals deal against a higher-end photographer, here's my honest take. For $200 and digital files, you may not get images that have been professionally edited. You're not getting someone with the depth of experience to consistently create portraits that feel elevated and artful. And as I mentioned earlier, images delivered on a jump drive or through a file-sharing link will most likely never make it onto your walls. We all have great intentions, and we all get busy.

Beyond that, those files are fragile. Jump drives fail. Cloud storage accounts get lost. Technology changes. I've watched it happen. I have negatives from 1996 that are still perfectly intact because physical, archival materials last in a way that digital storage simply does not guarantee.

The $200 option might produce some decent snapshots. But decent snapshots aren't why you hire a professional senior portrait photographer. You hire one because your kid deserves images that actually look like them at their best: images you'll want to frame, display, and hold onto for the rest of your life.

The Bottom Line
Senior portraits are a once-in-a-lifetime milestone. There are schedules to align, outfits to coordinate, and at least one little one who has decided today is the day they want nothing to do with cameras. But here is what I know after years of working with families: a multi-generational session does not have to be perfect to be beautiful. It just has to be real. And with a little preparation and the right mindset going in, it can also be genuinely fun.

When Reliability Is Everything
A few years ago, I was hired to photograph a multi-generational family portrait session tied to something deeply meaningful - a couple's 50th wedding anniversary. This was not a casual Sunday afternoon shoot. It was a milestone that the whole family had gathered around, and the images from that day were going to matter for a long time.
The family had a regular photographer they loved, but they could not use that person for this session. The reason? That photographer had a history of not keeping scheduled appointments. For something this significant, that was not a risk the family was willing to take.

So they called me.

I showed up on time, ready to go. That sounds like a low bar, but I want to be honest with you - for a family gathered around a once-in-a-lifetime anniversary, showing up prepared and on schedule was everything. It set the tone for the entire session. Everyone relaxed because they could see from the very first moment that the day was in good hands.

What Actually Makes These Sessions Work
The standard advice you will find everywhere talks about coordinating outfits and arriving early. Those things matter, but they are not what determines whether a session truly succeeds.

Here is what I have come to understand through experience.

1. Cover your classics first, then take a chance!
During that anniversary session, I did something I would not have attempted earlier in my career. After shooting the classic, formally posed family portraits - the ones everyone expects and the family came for - I tried some different, more unexpected poses. Ones that created eye-catching images you do not typically see in a traditional family portrait gallery.

The reason I could take that chance was simple: my bases were already covered. The classic images were done. So experimenting felt like a bonus, not a risk.

If you are planning your session, know that I will always make sure we get those timeless portraits first. Then we get to have some fun.

2. A reliable photographer is not optional for milestone sessions.
I mean this sincerely. When your family is gathering for something significant - an anniversary, a reunion, a season of life that will not come around again - you need someone who will be there, fully prepared, when they said they would be. Professionalism is not just a nice-to-have. It is the foundation that every other good thing in a session is built on.

3. The little kids do not need to be perfectly behaved.
This is the one I wish every parent knew before they arrived. I hear it all the time - parents apologizing in advance for their toddler, or worrying that their five-year-old is "too wild" or "won't cooperate." Here is what I want you to know: it is completely okay if the little ones are a little wild. It is okay if they are not thrilled about having their photo taken. I expect it, and I come prepared for it.

My approach with kids is easy and open. I work with them, not against them. I play with them, earn their trust, and let the session breathe instead of forcing anyone into poses that feel stiff or uncomfortable. Some of the most genuine, joyful images from a family session come from moments that looked like chaos from the outside.

​Beyond mindset, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are some simple things that help multi-generational sessions run smoothly:

  • Keep outfits coordinated, not matching. Complementary colors and similar tones photograph beautifully without looking like everyone ordered from the same catalog. Aim for timeless over trendy so the images hold up for decades.
  • Plan for a little buffer in your schedule. Multi-generational sessions involve more people, which naturally means more moving parts. A relaxed timeline keeps everyone comfortable and means we are not rushing the moments that matter.
  • Communicate with the whole family beforehand. When everyone knows what to expect - how long the session will run, what to wear, where to meet - the day starts with far less stress.

Why These Sessions Matter More Than You Might Realize
